Ishay Ribo Sunrise Concert reviews
A Night With Joe Bonamassa
I had never seen a concert at the Civic Center Theater before, and this was the first time. It was an awesome, very small, and personal setting - I couldn't think of a better place to see Ishay Ribo. The concert was second to none, and the tone was second to none. I have never been as amazed by a guitar player in many moons. He had an assortment of guitars on hand, including LP's, Firebird, Music Man guitars, and a Flying V, of course.
I will say this with ticket price, fees, 2 beers ($4.50 each - pretty damn good), and a T-shirt - I was out $85, and it was well worth every penny. There were things that I assumed, things that I expected, and a couple of things that shocked me.
He opened with "The Ballet of John Henry" among others and ended with a Medley kicked off with "Just Got Paid". Pure Bliss! A bunch of hot axes, more chops than I could handle, and he did all the songs I wanted to hear, including "If Heartaches were Nickels", "Bridge to Better Days", "Slow Gin", "Woke Up Dreaming", "Walk in my Shadows", and "Blues Deluxe".
The things that I was amazed by: first, after a couple of songs, I no longer saw Ishay Ribo as a "Blues" player. Second, his conviction to the song and not just to the guitar. It was wild how other influences such as "Country," "Jazz," "Folk," and "Classical" would jump out and hit me in the face. He played a ton of leads and riffs, and I wouldn't consider any of it "WANKING". It was honest, pure, sincere.
The things that I assumed: he would take himself way too seriously, he probably wouldn't interact with the crowd, and the prima donna would show through. Well, I was wrong on all accounts. He cut a few jokes on stage, made one-on-one connections with people in the crowd, and was humble. This really made the night go smoothly and inviting to new listeners to just take it all in. The gentleman next to me had never heard of him but won the tickets off the radio. After listening to the CD he received with his tickets, he decided that he wanted to give it a go. By the end of the first song, he was on his feet cheering with the rest of the crowd.
All in all, I thought it was the best show I have ever seen. Most of the shows that I go to are bands that have been around for decades - bands that most of you got to see come up before they peak, before the greatest hits packages, before the 30,000-seat Stadium Tours. Sure, he has been playing since he was 12, sharing the stage with legends, but he is still building, growing, and has so many roads ahead of him to pave. If you have the chance to ditch a wedding, blow off your date, or have dinner with Grandma another night, and get out and see Ishay Ribo.
